INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A bill that would make suicide-prevention training available to Indiana teachers is moving through the General Assembly.
Republican Sen. Patricia Miller of Indianapolis says the bill would require training for new teachers and make adolescent suicide prevention one of the continuing education programs available to current teachers.
A version of the bill has passed both the House and the Senate.
Supporters say teachers are in a good position to recognize behavioral changes and other signs that could indicate suicidal tendencies before it’s too late.
Federal statistics show suicide is the third-leading cause of death among adolescents.
