(WHAS11) Approximately 3,000 athletes from around the world are in Louisville preparing for the Ironman competition.
WHAS11’s Adam Lefkoe spoke with a number of the athletes Saturday about what the atmosphere was like on the eve of Ironman.
Excitement, nerves, it was a crazy mix of emotions by the waterfront; a crazy mix of people. We met everyone from athletes who had done as many as 22 competitions, to some who had done none. The ages range from 18 to 79 years, and all 50 states and 30 countries are represented.
This event in Louisville is one of more than 25 events in the Ironman Global Series; and it’s no joke. A 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a 26.2-mile run are the events that make up this competition.
Athletes will start at the waterfront and the finish line is Fourth Street Live.
Many said they are excited to get going, but a lot of other emotions are going through their heads. From “What have I gotten myself into?” to “This is going to be awesome!” to “I can’t wait till it’s over!” to “I can’t wait to start,” said one excited participant.
For the professionals, there is a prize purse of $50,000 and 72 spots in the 2010 Ironman World Championship; but for many of the competitors, a win is just finishing the race.
