LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A fire in Fern Creek that was originally under control and extinguished, but reignited and spread to another building about an hour later.
The fire happened in the 5500 block of Hames Trace near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Hurstbourne Parkway in the Park at Hurstbourne Apartments. The fire originally started in one apartment around 3:30 a.m. on the second level. It then spread throughout the building.
The occupants of 36 apartments had to be evacuated for their own safety before the roof collapsed in the primary affected building. The fire spread to a second building after 7 a.m.
During both fires, residents report there were no smoke alarms that went off.
Fire officials say that the apartment complex has had several fires in the past few years.
Firefighters believe the fire is a result of an electric spark. But, they don’t know how the second fire started. Officials will investigate the fire to make an official determination about how both fires began.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported. Investigators credit firewalls for preventing further damage to the apartment complex.
