OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) — Organizers of a mentoring program for schoolchildren in Owensboro's public schools say it is improving their behavior and attendance.
The Owensboro Noon Optimists Club took on the project about a year ago, and now it has 30 volunteers mentoring 32 children.
The students who have been paired with mentors have shown an improvement. They meet weekly at the 5-6 Center's Family Resource Center.
Organizers pair students with mentors who share similar interests. They commit to devoting one hour per week to the child for a year.
