FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky advocate for organ donations says a bill advanced by a Senate committee would lead to more donations that can result in life-saving transplants.
The measure updates the procedures for Kentuckians to make, alter or revoke their wishes to make anatomical gifts. The proposal — sponsored by Senate President David Williams — won approval from the Senate Health and Welfare Committee.
Paul E. O'Flynn, executive director of Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates, said about 700 people in Kentucky are on waiting lists for organ transplants. He predicted that the bill, if enacted, would eventually increase the number of people on the organ donor registry.
The proposal would make Kentucky's organ donation law consistent with laws in about 40 other states.
