LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Southern Baptists in Kentucky are going door-to-door over the next two weeks in what they call the most ambitious evangelistic outreach in their history.
The Courier-Journal reports Southern Baptists are placing plastic bags with brochures containing evangelistic messages on door handles. They hope to mobilize as many as 50,000 volunteers for the outreach effort.
The convention is also spending $182,000 on television, radio and billboard ads in and around Kentucky. The goal is to reach as many of the state's estimated 1.5 million households as possible.
The Kentucky Baptist Convention's membership of 770,629 has held basically flat over the past decade while the state's population has risen more than 5 percent. And baptisms are down 12 percent over the past decade.
