LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — General Electric Co. has announced plans to make a new line of energy-efficient washers and dryers in Louisville, adding some 430 jobs to its Appliance Park operation.

GE said Monday that workers will start producing the washing machines in the third quarter of 2012, and new dryer production will follow a year later. The company said the front-load appliances will use technology aimed at reducing energy demand during peak times.

The announcement brings more production momentum for the 900-acre Appliance Park operation.

Earlier this year, GE said it will build a new line of energy-efficient, hybrid electric water heaters in Louisville, adding about 400 jobs at Appliance Park.

The announcement comes as Kentucky struggles with double-digit unemployment.
