LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A student who grew up craving books and learning in eastern Kentucky has won one of the world's most coveted academic awards.
Monica Marks has been selected as a Rhodes Scholar. The Courier-Journal reports that she is the University of Louisville's first Rhodes Scholar.
The 23-year-old Marks says that while she was growing up in Rush, Ky., the discussion wasn't about which college to attend, but whether you would even go to college. Neither of her parents graduated from high school, and no one in her extended family went to college.
Marks' studies in Islamic law have already taken her to places like Jordan, Tanzania and Tunisia. She is now studying in Turkey as a Fulbright Scholar.
