FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A guard at a Kentucky prison says inmates who rioted and set fire to buildings in August were upset over the food they were being served.

Matt Hughes, a corrections officer at Northpoint Training Center, says inmates complained they weren't being fed enough and that the food was of poor quality. Hughes was testifying before a legislative panel on Friday.

Hughes diputed the Department of Corrections' assertion that inmates rioted because they were put on lockdown after a gang incident. He says that's "bogus."

The Courier-Journal reports that Hughes called the food "slop."

Inmates burned six buildings and 16 people suffered minor injuries at the facility near Burgin on Aug. 21.

Rep. Brent Yonts has prefiled a bill that would cancel the state's $12 million contract with Aramark Services.
