LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- A Fayette County judge has signed off on having a former state lawmaker charged with killing his ex-girlfriend undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

District Judge Julie Muth Goodman also said during a hearing Tuesday that former state Rep. Steve Nunn would not be required to submit to a DNA test at this time. Nunn did not appear at the hearing.

His lawyer, Astrida Lemkins, did not elaborate on her motion for the psychiatric evaluation.

Nunn has pleaded not guilty to the Sept. 11 shooting death of 29-year-old Amanda Ross outside her Lexington home. Nunn, a former gubernatorial hopeful, was arrested at a Hart County cemetery the day of Ross' death. Police found him with apparent with self-inflicted wounds.

Supporters of Ross attended the hearing wearing badges with her picture.
