(WHAS11) - Karen Cunagin Sypher first contacted our newsroom in April making allegations against Rick Pitino. We didn't air what she said because she never filed any report with police or filed an official complaint. About a month ago, she did file a complaint. Now, for the first time, what she told sex assault detectives is going public.
"She said she was raped, it happened at Porcini's restaurant on Frankfort Avenue," states LMPD's Investigative Report.
For months, Sypher has maintained that she is the victim although she is the only person who has been charged with a crime.
"Justice will prevail, I've always said," said Sypher during an interview in June. "I have been stoned over, and over, and over again. I don't think you can find another stone in the state of Kentucky. But I'm still breathing. I will continue to do that until the truth is out. That is all I want."
LMPD detectives interviewed both sides. Sypher and Pitino agree on two fronts-they both agree they had sex, and they agree that he paid for her abortion as a result.
Sypher showed us the paperwork for her abortion in Cincinnati-back then, she was "Karen Wise." But that's where they stop agreeing. She says it was rape. He says it was not.
Sypher's attorney released this statement Wednesday:
"It is always unfortunate when matters such as this have to be addressed in a public forum and believe me, there is more than one victim here. Karen and her family have suffered enormously throughout this entire ordeal. While some of the facts are now being released to the public, there is much more to this story. Those details will be forthcoming at the proper time in the proper forum. That forum is the federal court and we look forward to our opportunity to address these charges fully and completely at trial."
A date for Sypher's trial on federal extortion charges has not been set. She is scheduled to be in court for a pre-trial hearing at the end of August.
"Every day there is a new piece to my puzzle," Sypher told us. "And when the puzzle is put together, the whole world will know the truth."
After LMPD detectives conducted these interviews, the Commonwealth Attorney's office investigated. They say Sypher's claims are "void of credibility" and "lacking any supporting evidence." They will not pursue any charges against Rick Pitino.
So, at this point, the only person charged with any crime is Karen Sypher. She's facing federal charges of lying to the FBI and trying to extort money from Pitino.
