(WHAS11) - The newest winner of the WHAS11 Excel Award is setting the educational foundation for kindergarten students at Bloom Elementary.
Treva Werner is a kindergarten teacher, who makes the historic school building in the Highlands come alive.
Her principal calls her a natural teacher.
And after 15 years in the classroom, Treva Werner is an Excel Award winner, a teacher who is constantly evolving and changing her approach to 5-year-olds.
They may be the most organized 5-year-olds you'll ever see. They walk in line. They sit in rows and Treva Werner is their constant shepherd, showing them the path to learning.
The class is playful about learning. But the teacher is serious about making their first experience with school very positive.
And preparing kids for the day when she won't be there anymore.
Werner is a constant planner and doer. She's famous for calling her principal after school, and waking up to make notes in the middle of the night.
Werner says each new approach depends on the composition of the class.
But every classroom day has one goal, getting these children ready for first grade. And they are prepared, thanks to a teacher always preparing them for the day when she must say goodbye.
Our next Excel Awards are Feb. 18th in Jefferson County and then March 4th in Elizabethtown.
