(WHAS11) - Our newest Excel Award winner started student teaching when she was a child in the basement of her home.

Watch this story

Alycia Horn practices her craft on 5th graders at Maple Elementary in Jeffersonville.

And now she has proof that practice makes the perfect teacher.

It really is an amazing and touching story, of a child who was encouraged by her parents when they recognized her dream to be a school teacher.

Alycia Horn's parents actually created a make believe classroom for her, and now in Jeffersonville, all those dreams are coming true.

Horn is now teaching in the real world, but her skills were fashioned in the world of make believe.

A little girl wanted to be a teacher, so her parents built her a classroom.

It took them to this moment, teacher of the year in greater Clark County.

Even in college, Horn's professors knew that Alycia would be special in the classroom.

Horn is still well prepared, working extra hours every day after class.

As an Excel Award winner, Alycia horn receives a one thousand dollar teacher grant from the Excel sponsor, E on U.S.

We have three more Excel Awards during this school year. On April 22 nd, Gary Roedemeier will visit Klondike Elementary school. Then in May, the Excel Award is presented in Shelby and Oldham counties.
