In that study only a 1/3 of kids in the probiotic group had a cough or runny nose compared to more than 80% of kids who took nothing.
"The majority of our immunity is actually centered in our gut that's why it's not very surprising to me that we're seeing a role for probiotics in the prevention of flu and upper respiratory infections," said Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine.
Doctors are calling for more independent research on probiotics and urge parents to focus on the basics this flu season; get your child a flu shot, make sure they wash their hands and stay home if they, or you, are sick.
