(WHAS11) - Not everyone can say they've had a chance to visit our nation's capitol, and right now it's a trip many can't afford.

But this weekend, a group of 8th graders from Meyzeek Middle School will spend their weekend in Washington D.C. on a graduation trip.

Watch this story

It's a trip that almost didn't happen for several of them, but thanks to donations from all around the world, the trip is on!

The most well-known landmark in Kentuckiana takes center stage this weekend-the twin spires.

But at Meyzeek Middle School, all eyes are on a different landmark-the White House!

The 8th graders, along with their social studies teacher, are focusing on what they'll be seeing the first Saturday in May in D.C.

"I want to see the reflecting pool, really want to see that," says one student.

This story has a happy ending, not always the case in this doom-and-gloom economy.

So how about a positive story, thanks to something called positiveeconomicnews.com.

Barry Lauterwasser started the website to spread good economic news and took on helping Meyzeek, where his daughter attends school.

He posted an e-mail from the principal asking for donations to help sponsor 12 students who otherwise couldn't afford the trip.

Among those who sent money, the President of Steinway Piano's in Japan, who missed his own 8th grade trip.

Now the students will get to experience the trip of a lifetime, thanks to people who decided to lend a helping hand.

About 150 people from Meyzeek will fly out Friday morning and afternoon to D.C. and return home Sunday.

Because so many people donated money, the school was able to assist 14 students who otherwise couldn't afford it.

And yes, the students will all be writing thank you notes to the donors.
