(WHAS11) - The government wants more Americans to get their flu shots this winter after a new report shows just a fraction of those at risk get the vaccination.

The centers for disease control and prevention shows that in Indiana only 17.7% of children ages 6 to 23 months were vaccinated.

73% of seniors got a flu shot.

Flu shots begin in Louisville on October 1 and experts say make an appointment now, everyone is at risk.

Nationwide, the CDC recommends a flu vaccine for as many as 261 million Americans.

Flu shots cost $30 and the nasal flu mist costs $35.
