(WHAS11) -Smokers could soon have to put out their cigarettes in New Albany. The smoking ban was passed at the city council meeting Thursday night.

More than 100 people turned out.

Those against the ban say their businesses would suffer and that they will be forced to fire employees.

Supporters say they're concerned with the health risks associated with smoking.

There's still a chance the ban won't go into effect by March of 2009.

Since the vote was so close last night, New Albany's mayor could veto it.
