Louisville, Ky. (July 8, 2009) -- The Louisville Free Public Library announces the launch of its new Job Shop offering free employment and career resources, with dedicated staff, in one place. Located at the Main Library, the Job Shop is the place for job and career information.
Sponsored by the Library Foundation, the Job Shop offers free computer classes to improve job skills, books and other reference materials to help with writing resumes, interviewing and choosing a new career, free internet access, computers and space to work, as well as helpful, knowledgeable staff. In addition, the Job Shop will present free workshops hosted by local career development and professional organizations.
Classes include What Employers Are Looking For, How to Network Effectively, and How to Answer Difficult Interview Questions - led by such community presenters as KentuckianaWorks, Dress for Success, Pleasure Ridge Park Business Association, Highlands Commerce Guild, U of L School of Business, and many others.
"People come to the Library every day looking for help with their resumes or how to apply for a job online," said Library Director Craig Buthod. "The formation of the Job Shop simply enhances services already being offered at the Library - increasing access to information and job-related training at a time when the community needs it most."
Among the highlights of the Job Shop:
- hundreds of up-to-date books on career options, company information, interview skills, resume writing, test preparation, and other job and career search topics
-20 laptop computers just for job seekers with access to research databases, resume templates, and internet job search sites
-trained staff to help with online job searches and other job information
-computer classes and online tutorials
-workshops and seminars hosted by career development and professional organizations
-free Wi-Fi internet access
-space for video conferencing (by appointment)
-access to fax machine and copier
"In these troubled economic times, the Library Foundation is happy to assist the Library in the creation of the Job Shop," said Library Foundation Board member Pamela M. Greenwell. "At a very difficult time in someone's life, the Job Shop makes looking for a job just a little bit easier. The Job Shop can be of assistance to those with good computer skills, or those with limited computer skills. The Foundation is committed to supporting the great work being done by our Library."
For those who can't make it to the Job Shop, the Library is also offering some of the same job and career information online at . Features include "Teach Yourself" computer classes, career databases, a job news blog, and resume writing help.
