LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A 4-year-old boy has been given a new chance at life.

Mohammed Al Maqtari was born deaf and almost mute.

In the country of Yemen, his family was told there was nothing that could be done for him. His father never gave up hope.

After coming to the U.S. on a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, Mohammed’s father found help with Dr. Gadre.

He believed Mohammed was the perfect candidate for a Cochlear Implant.

The family wasn’t able to afford the surgery, so Dr. Gadre pledged $5,000 of his own money and Mohammed’s father raised $20,000 more through the help of social media.

Mohammed had the surgery and it has been a success. He can now hear and has began saying a few words.
