MAYSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A bronze statue of U.S. Army Col. Charles Young will be in Mason County in September as part of a campaign to have him promoted posthumously to the rank of brigadier general.

The Ledger Independent (http://bit.ly/1r0vRxq) reports the stop in Mason County is part of a three-city tour in Kentucky, coordinated by the National Coalition of Black Veterans Organizations in conjunction with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kentucky and Tennessee District.

Young, who was born in May's Lick and was a member of Omega Psi Phi, was the first African-American to achieve the rank of colonel, and the highest-ranking African-American officer in the United States Army until his death in 1922.

Young's promotion must be approved by President Barack Obama.
