(WHAS11) -- Two Ky. firefighters who died on the job were some of the 89 people honored at a national ceremony Sunday.

Among them is a Buechel firefighter whose memory still lives on among his colleagues and family.
Sunday was a day of remembrance for many families of firefighters. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service was held in Emmitsburg, Md.

"We think about him every day and miss him greatly,” said Sgt. James Riggs of the Buechel Fire Department.

Among those remembered Sergeant James Riggs good friend, Major Terry Cannon.

"At his passing we retired his number,” Riggs said. “3703 will not be given to anyone else.”

Cannon spent 30 years of his life working as a firefighter. He died of a heart attack less than 24 hours after responding to a fire in January of last year. He was 51-years-old at the time.

His uniform still hangs at the Buechel Fire Department under his nameplate along with a plaque.

And outside, there is a marker with flowers and a flag blowing in the wind. He was one of 89 fallen firefighters remembered at that national ceremony Sunday. Sergeant Riggs says Cannon this is an excellent way to remember the popular firefighter.

"I never met someone he didn't know. He was always running into people he knew. We jokingly referred to him as the Mayor of Buechel because he knew everybody. He never had an unkind word to say. He was just a nice guy and a noble firefighter,” said Riggs.

Worne Hall was also honored Sunday. He was a member of the Hitchins Volunteer Fire Department in Carter County, Ky.He died of a heart attack on the job at the age of 89.
