LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11) — A man is dead after he was struck while trying to cross Dixie Highway early Thursday morning.

The accident happened in the 4500 block near a Thornton's convenience store around 4 a.m.

Police said 47-year-old Michael Gibson was trying to cross the six lanes of traffic when he was hit by a blue truck.

“The subject who was driving was on his way to work and simply did not see him,” Sgt. Josh Myers with Shively Police said.
Gibson had just left the Thorton’s Gas Station minutes before the deadly wreck.

Hamid Mojhtareizadeh, who works at the store, said Gibson came in to buy some beer and the two spoke briefly.  Mojhtareizadeh, was emotional as he spoke about the brief encounter.

“You talk to somebody and all of a sudden they are dead,” he said.

Mojhtareizadeh described Gibson as a polite man who said he was visiting family.
As Gibson left the store Mojhtareizadeh said he told Gibson to be careful crossing Dixie Highway.

“I just mentioned out of my mouth, ‘Just please be careful going across the street’, because I see a lot of people going across the street getting hit all the months I’ve been working here. I didn’t want something bad to happen. Unfortunately, it was a bad tragedy,” Mojhtareizadeh said.

Police said Gibson was one lane away from getting to the sidewalk when he was hit. Gibson died on the scene from multiple blunt force trauma.

Police said they do not expect to file any charges against the driver who hit Gibson.
