LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11) -- The Kentucky Derby Festival officials have decided to cancel the Great Balloon Rush Hour Race Friday morning due to weather concerns.
The race was officially called off just before 5 a.m. after a meeting between KDF officials and balloonists.
"Gusty winds are very difficult to fly in, they pull balloons in directions you can't anticipate," US Bank balloon pilot Scott McClinton said.
Officials said the rest of the weekend's events is expected to go off without a hitch - the Balloon Glow is at 9 p.m. at the Kentucky Expo Center and the Great Balloon Race is set for Saturday at 7 a.m. at Bowman Field.
Thursday night, a large crown turned out to see the 18 balloons all lit up at the Balloon Glimmer.
Some of the balloonists flying this year flew in the first race back in 1974.
