JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- The man who was acting as interim sheriff in Clark County, Ind. has died.
Lt. Col. Brian Meyer of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department said Kahafer passed away Monday around 11pm at the hospital after he was taken off life support.
John Kahafer was hospitalized in the Kentuckiana Medical Center earlier this month after he was found at his home unconscious and unresponsive.
Kahafer was patrol officer with the department for eight, served as a detective for 18 years and ten as Chief of Detectives. He served as chief for the last seven years before being name interim sheriff.
He was tapped to fill in as interim sheriff when Danny Rodden went on paid administrative leave after he was indicted on federal felony charges.
Meyer will assume the role of interim chief deputy.
Funeral services for Kahafer will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at Scott Funeral Home, with cremation to follow. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 12 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
