(WHAS11) - A Louisville community rich in history is now on edge after a string of murders over the last week.

Portland residents told WHAS11 Thursday that its time they spoke up about what's going on in their neighborhoods.

Some told WHAS11 they are scared and they want you to remember they are a part of Louisville too.

“Portland’s getting real bad I’ve been here 47 years we own our house I’m trying to get my mom out of Portland,” says Mary Whitten.

In a little over a week Portland residents have seen three murders in their community.
The crimes only separated by a few street blocks.

Family members tell WHAS11, 17-year-old Timothy O'Conner was killed along with his 21-year-old brother Wednesday night in the alley behind St. Xavier near 22nd Street.

These are the latest victims of a violent crime in Portland.  Scared neighbors are calling for change.

“It’s getting to be a problem because I’m thinking about moving and that’s ridiculous that you feel like you gotta move because you don’t feel safe to come out of your yard,” says Portland resident Cindy Lay.

The president of the Portland Neighborhood Association says she believes that crime rose in Portland when the city tore down the Clarksdale Public Housing Development.

She believes many of the displaced residents found a home in more affordable Portland neighborhood and now disputes and clashes are turning to violent crimes.
