(WHAS11) Across the world and here in Kentuckiana many organizations, including schools, churches, temples and mosques are pulling together money and supplies for the earthquake victims in Haiti.
At Temple Shalom in Louisville, outreach for Haiti is taking off.
Months before a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti, an interfaith group in Louisville knew the country needed help.
Paul W. Rosenblum, Outreach for Haiti said, “We decided to adopt an impoverished country. (To) Take on one project at a time.”
Retired Judge Rosenblum returned from Haiti just days before the earthquake struck.
The plan was to build a clean water well and purification system for the impoverished adopted city.
Now, they know the country needs that and much more.
Gillian Lazarus, a 10th grader said, “I thought it was horrible. I’ve heard so many things about what’s going on. I just couldn’t imagine being there.”
Gillian is one of dozens of children helping to get supplies to the devastated country. She’s raised nearly $200 from her school, Kentucky Country Day and brought in even more in supplies.
Karen Bloom, M.D., “Our whole goal is to teach children there are people less fortunate. There are things even they can do to help others.”
And that’s exactly what they’re doing; helping others, one box at a time. The group has paired with Hope for Haiti in hopes to fill two, 757 planes that will fly the supplies directly to the people who need it most. It’s a cause this group knew existed. Now they are sharing their effort with the rest of the country.
Before this, nobody knew that less than 800 miles off the border of the U.S.A. was the poorest country in the western Hemisphere, where people are dying by the droves every day; and that was before the earthquake.
