HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- More than a year after a devastating tornado hit Henryville on March 2, there was a very unlikely reunion at the Henryville Elementary School.
Penny the Snake was the classroom pet for Ms. Shawn Turner’s 6th grade class. After the school was destroyed she thought the snake was gone.
“I came up here and saw that all that was left of my classroom were gutter, and so I knew I had lost 27 years worth of teaching things,” Turner said.
A few days ago the principal of the school called Turner and told her Penny had been found. Turner said she was in complete disbelief.
“He said 'I have your snake,' and I just kept saying 'you're lying you're lying,'” Turner said.
Turner found out while crews were at the school demolishing, a man came across Penny in her aquarium. The aquarium was fully intact and did not have a scratch on it. The same man had recently been in touch with the principal about returning to Henryville for the one year anniversary parade when he told him about the snake.
Turner said with everything the community of Henryville has been though, this was just another blessing. “This is a little bit of icing on the cake to have her back.”
