INDIANAPOLIS (WHAS11) – The family of the man suspected of fatally shooting an Indianapolis police officer early Friday morning is offering sympathy to the fallen officer’s loved ones.
41-year-old officer Rod Bradway responded to a domestic disturbance call and when he arrived to the scene, 24-year-old Steven Byrdo was holding his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.
Police say Byrdo immediately began firing at Bradway, who died later at the hospital. Byrdo was killed after officers on the scene returned gunfire.
In a statement to Bradway’s wife and children, Byrdo’s family said “It is our prayer that God will provide you with peace and healing during this very difficult time.”
A vigil was held yesterday to pay tribute to the fallen officer.
Bradway’s funeral will be held next Thursday and he will be buried at the Heroes of Public Safety section of Crown Hill Cemetery following a flag ceremony.
