MILTON, Ky. (AP) -- Transportation officials in Kentucky and Indiana say work is tentatively scheduled to begin Thursday morning to slide a nearly 100-foot concrete bridge section over the Milton bank of the Ohio River.

Transportation agencies in both states say workers plan to use jacks to lift a corner of the new Milton-Madison, Ind., Bridge steel truss so a steel bridge bearing that dislodged on Tuesday can be replaced.

Officials say sliding the concrete section will take much of the day and that preparations are continuing in order to slide the nearly half-mile steel truss laterally 55 feet onto permanent piers. A date for that has not been determined but is still expected to occur in March.

The agencies said structural engineers have determined the bridge will be safe to reopen to traffic after being slid onto permanent piers.
