AUSTIN, Ind. (WHAS11) – An Austin, Indiana woman is in critical condition at a Louisville hospital after police say her husband stabbed her multiple times in front of her children.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a home on West State Road where they found Tara Blankenbaker suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Deputies say her estranged husband Charles Blankenbaker stabbed her at her grandparents home in front of her two and four-year-old children.
According to the report, Charles Blankenbaker fled the scene and deputies found his empty vehicle on State Road 160 where they believe he was trying to reach his parent’s residence.
He was found later by Washington County deputies and Indiana State police. Officers say he was also suffering from a stab wound to the chest which they believe was self-inflicted.
Charles Blankenbaker was also flown to University Hospital in Louisville and his condition is unknown.
Scott County officials say a warrant for his arrest has been prepared and will be served but will also go through the extradition process from Kentucky.
Charles Blankenbaker is expected to be formally charged in Scott Circuit Court sometime next week.
