LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The 5-year-old girl who survived a New Albany house fire is still recovering at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis
Doctors have said she has a long road ahead; her body is covered with third degree burns. Her mother, Theresea Hughes, said her daughter, Tatyana, has still yet to hear the worst new—her three siblings weren’t able to survive the blaze.
Hughes said she believes Tatyana may already know.
Officials believe the fire ignited after Cody Cashion, 18, shot a flare through a window, into the room where the children were sleeping.
“It messes with my head,” Hughes said. “I thank god Tatyana is here, but my other kids was on fire.”
Hughes said she was visiting a friend, with her kids and had stepped outside to smoke a cigarette.
“All I remember is trying to open that door to get in there to save my babies,” she said. “When I opened that door that smoke and that fire pushed me back and I said, ‘god don’t do this to me.’”
Tatyana was able to walk earlier this week and the community has several fundraisers planned for the family. An online fund has been set up for the family and Fifth/Third Banks are accepting donations for the Hughes’ Memorial Fund, as well.
