NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) – On Tuesday, May 20, New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan accepted the New Albany Police chief’s request for reassignment.
Sherri Knight was the first female police chief in the New Albany Police Department’s history and is an 18-year veteran of the department.
According to Gahan, in Knight’s letter asking for reassignment she stated that after some thought she decided that it would be best for her family and herself to transition out of her position as chief and resume responsibilities within the Detective division.
Gahan said the assistant chief is also stepping down. The third in command recently retired.
He said the New Albany Police Department will be run by captains in the interim and he hopes to have a new chief soon but he has no one specific in mind.
According to Gahan, Knight and the assistant chief are being reassigned to the detective division.
