COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) -- Police say a motorcyclist was badly injured when a hay bale flew off a trailer and struck him on a southern Indiana highway.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department says 38-year-old William Eland III of Indianapolis was riding with his wife on Indiana 46 a few miles west of Columbus when the crash happened Saturday evening.
Sheriff's Maj. Todd Noblitt tells The Republic (http://bit.ly/13KfTjh ) that a witness saw the hay bale hit Eland. His motorcycle then went off the road and hit a fence before stopping.
William Eland was listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where 32-year-old Lindsay Eland was in fair condition.
Investigators were trying to locate the trailer that was loaded with hay bales, saying that the driver might not have known about the lost bale.
