BEVERLY SHORES, Ind. (AP) -- A Lafayette man has died after being caught in high Lake Michigan surf at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
A lakeshore news release reports 37-year-old Gonzola Silva was pronounced dead by doctors at Michigan City's St. Anthony Hospital Saturday night.
National Park Service spokesman Ken Mehne says Silva was swimming off Lakeview Beach near Beverly Shores when family members spotted him struggling.
Mehne tells The (Munster) Times and WNDU-TV that some family members tried to help Silva but struggled in the high surf themselves. Mehne says two of them had to be pulled from the water.
Rescuers found Silva floating in the surf about 10 feet from shore.
The National Weather Service had issued a hazardous beach advisory with waves of 4-5 feet expected.
