LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Its mission is to raise awareness about the benefits of breast feeding and the first week in August is World Breast Feeding Week.

To mark the occasion thousands of women and their babies across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the big latch, on a synchronized breastfeeding event.

Locally, the event was this morning at Bob Hedge Park in Jeffersonville.

Last year, more than 8,800 children took part in the global breastfeeding event.

The group is trying to break that record in 2013.
