INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The top Democrat in the Indiana House will lead an effort next week to delete a clause prohibiting civil unions from a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage.

The full House could consider possible changes to the proposed amendment as soon as Monday. House minority leader Scott Pelath (PEE'-lath) said Friday he will offer an amendment on behalf of House Democrats to strip the civil unions clause from the resolution.

The House elections committee approved the measure on a party-line vote this week. But concerns have persisted about the second part of the measure, which bans civil unions and could bar employer benefits for same-sex couples.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long said Friday the resolution would go to the Senate Judiciary Committee if it clears the House.
