CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana State Police say four girls who escaped from a central Indiana home for troubled youths have been captured after police opened fire on their vehicle.

Sgt. Kim Riley says the girls ages 13 to 17 escaped early Sunday from the ResCare Residential Program in Greencastle and stole a van owned by the program, which treats boys and girls with behavior problems.

Riley says a Crawfordsville police officer stopped the van about 1:20 a.m. in that city and ordered the girls out, but the driver shifted the van into reverse, struck the officer's car and attempted to run him down while the officer opened fire on the vehicle.

The van stopped a short distance away and the girls fled on foot but police captured them all.
