EpiPens recalled: What you need to know

EpiPen recall: What every parent needs to know

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – If you use the life-saving allergy shot, EpiPen, you might want to check the lot number on the side of the box.

Meridian Medical Technologies, a Pfizer company that makes Mylan’s EpiPen injector, issued a nationwide, voluntary recall— including the children's version, EpiPen Jr.

“You kind of have to catch your breath a little bit because it's such an important thing for anyone with food allergies,” said Aimee Boyd, whose four-year-old daughter has severe food allergies.

“The potential defect could make the device difficult to activate in an emergency (failure to activate or increased force needed to activate) and have significant health consequences for a patient experiencing a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis),” company says in a statement.

“I mean it's a matter of life or death, potentially, if it doesn't work,” Boyd said.

Boyd checked her daughter’s allergy pens when she heard about the recall.  The lot number and expiration date did not match any of those potentially defected, but feels for those who are.

“It can definitely be scary and in those times when you don't know before you can check your epi-pens, whether or not they're recalled, it's definitely one of those things on your mind.  You want to make sure everything is in place in case they have that allergic reaction.”
