Doctors recommend physicals before start of school

Back-to-school physicals for kids

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – As students in our area stretch out the final days of summer vacation, many parents are already lining up school shopping trips and physicals.

Norton Healthcare wants parents to know that back to school physicals can save lives.

It’s very common for student athletes to be mandated to get annual sports physicals but doctors say every student, regardless of hobby, needs to be examined.

Norton Healthcare suggests making an appointment or seeking out a pediatrician instead of using the rapidly growing pop-up clinics.

“That pediatrician is going to know you the best, know your past medical history, know your family history and again sports physicals are very specific to sports – so we recommend those well check visits where we are going to ask more than just those sports specific questions,” Dr. Drew Duerson said.

Physicals are the perfect opportunity to discuss family history and check for anything out of the ordinary.

Norton Healthcare says just call (502) 629-KIDS for more information guidance.
