Heather Bland has been waiting for a miracle, and now a couple has come to Heather's aid to provide her the funding that could save her life.
A Louisville restaurant owning couple said they were inspired to hold a fundraiser after reading "God Said Yes," Heather's autobiography. In the book, Heather details how an accident changed her life at 4 years old. She said her mother accidentally backed over her with the car. The tires rested on Heather's stomach and destroyed most of her internal organs.
"I have a stomach, lungs, liver, pancreas," Heather said as she pointed out her past surgeries. She said everything below her pancreas is either man-made or doesn't exist.
Heather has had more than 200 surgical procedures to keep her alive, which has put her more than $1 million in debt. Now, Heather said she needs another $4,800 to pay for an experimental drug. It's money she doesn't have.
Steve and Maysel Turpen said wanted to help Heather. At 5 p.m. Sunday, they're hosting a fundraiser for her at their restaurant Creeker's at 6330 Bardstown Road. It costs $5 to attend.
