FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) --The Kentucky Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund will provide some $278,000 in grants to more than a dozen organizations to promote breast cancer awareness, screening and other services across the state.

The Department for Public Health, which administers the trust fund, announced the grants on Monday.

Dr. Stephanie Mayfield, the state's health commissioner, said the grants will help establish and expand programs that will increase access to information, screenings and treatments. Most of the recipients are pressing to provide services to the medically underserved.

The trust fund was established in 2005 to support and advance breast cancer research, education, treatment, screening and awareness efforts by providing grants. So far, nearly 70 local health departments, hospitals and community-based organizations have received some $1 million.
