LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - - Researchers at The University of Virginia are trying to figure out how a single tick bite can cause people to suddenly develop an allergy to red meat.

Since 2006 around 1,000 cases have been reported.

Allergists say patients bitten by the Lone Star Tick get hives, itching, and even more severe symptoms once they eat beef or pork.

They remind everyone to take precautions before spending time outdoors in order to keep from getting bitten.
