(ABC News) - On Thursday Governor Maggie Hassan declared a state of emergency over the potpourri product that police said caused 44 overdoses in just 72 hours.
“The spice products can be treated with a variety of things. Some of them are showing up with controlled substances that make them illegal, but we don't know that that's true for all of them,” Hassan said.
The state of emergency triggers a public health response and targets the bubble gum flavor of one specific brand called Smacked!
It allows police and health officials to pull the product off store shelves, but it does not apply to other spice products.
Since Monday, Manchester police have responded to more than 40 overdoses connected to the bubble gum flavored spice, treated with a synthetic chemical similar to THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. It has a similar effects when smoked.
