(WHAS11) -- When it comes to prescription drugs the generic versions are a lot cheaper than the name brands, but the price of the generics could vary depending on where you get them.

A survey by Consumer Reports found that some pharmacies charge more than others for generic prescriptions.

Secret shoppers visited 200 pharmacies that carry generic versions of five popular drugs.

The shoppers found that over a year they could pay as much as $749 more for a generic at the highest priced pharmacy, compared with the lowest.

The priciest places: CVS, Target and Rite-Aid.

The least expensive were Costco and Sam's Club.
