WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) (WHAS11) -- Purdue University has backed away from a total ban on smoking on its main campus and instead will limit it to specific areas.
The policy will take effect July 1, 2010 on the West Lafayette campus. It follows anti-smoking measures already in place at Indiana University, Ball State University, Ivy Tech Community College and other institutions.
Purdue Executive Vice President for Business and Finance Al Diaz said University Administrators met with several campus groups in forming the new policy. It also conducted a campus-wide survey.
Diaz says the July start date allows smokers to take advantage of programs to quit.
The new policy also will ban smoking in university motor vehicles.
