(WHAS11) -- There's a new strain of bird flu that scientists say could pose a threat to humans.
Harbor seals with the "H3N8" strain began washing up on the shore from Maine to Massachusetts last September.
At least 162 people have died already.
Most of the seals were not even six months old yet and appeared to have severe pneumonia and skin lesions.
Researchers say the virus jumped from birds to the marine mammals. Other strains of the avian flu have spread to humans before.
