LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) -- Officials from Kosair Children's Hospital and the Children's Hospital Foundation have announced the creation of a new expanded family space for patients at the hospital, called the White Castle NICU Family Center.
The announcement, which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11, at 2 p.m., will take place in the lobby of Kosair Children's Hospital. A $500,000 gift from White Castle, made possible through a generous customer donation effort, will help make this family center possible.
This renovation will provide much-needed space for families with children in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Kosair Children's Hospital, increasing the current area by 1,200 square feet. It is part of the third phase of a hospital renovation and brings the Children's Hospital Foundation's total investment in programs and services to $12 million.
This $500,000 commitment combines $250,000 already paid in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with an additional commitment of $250,000. These dollars are raised during White Castle's annual customer appreciation donation campaigns, which began in 2007.
"At White Castle, we're completely committed to feeding hope," said Jamie Richardson, Vice President, White Castle. "We are so thankful for the life-saving work of Kosair Children's Hospital, and honored to be able to increase our support on behalf of our generous customers and incredible team members."
The White Castle NICU Family Center will include a dining area, lounge, kitchenette and other amenities, such as showers and restrooms, to help provide a "home away from home" for families with children being cared for in the NICU. Computers will be on hand to help family members connect with those unable to visit the hospital, and the space will be appropriate for both adults and young children. White Castle is able to give this gift with help from local community members, who donate funds during in-store promotions.
"The new family center is being created with families in mind," said Lynnie Meyer, MSN, R.N., CFRE, executive director of the Children's Hospital Foundation. "Thanks to White Castle, we are able to create a space for them to relax and take a moment away from an otherwise stressful situation."
Through family-centered care, the Kosair Children's Hospital NICU serves premature infants and babies born with conditions requiring advanced care or surgery.
Babies in Kentucky and Southern Indiana suffer from some of the nation's highest rates of premature births, low birth weights and infant mortality. Because newborn care and family comfort are the top priorities, Kosair Children's Hospital continues to improve the NICU using a developmental care model focused on advanced medicine complemented with treatment rooms, nurseries and public areas designed for low noise and light levels. While families may spend as much time at their child's bedside as they like, it is important for them to have a place to go that feels a little more like home - a place like the White Castle NICU Family Center.
