LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- For the first time we are hearing from Madeline Abramson, the wife of Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson, since she revealed she is being treated for breast cancer.
The two helped kick off the Kentucky State Fair ceremony Thursday night, Aug. 15; Abramson and her husband the former Louisville mayor joined in to sing my “Old Kentucky Home.”
Madeline says she found out earlier in 2013 that she had cancer.
She's since had surgery and radiation treatments in Louisville. The cancer was discovered during a routine mammogram and follow-up testing.
"Well I think anyone who deals with this type of challenge in life, I’m very fortunate, I had early detection, a great support system and we put these things behind us and move on," Madeline Abramson said.
Madeline Abramson says she wanted to share her story as a way to emphasize preventative care.
"I feel great, I’ve been here at the fair most of the day participating with Kentucky Cancer and Kentucky One Health, screening efforts, talking about screening for colon cancer; I’m back to a busy schedule and enjoying it, enjoying the fair."
Jerry Abramson recently announced that he is not running for Kentucky governor. He says the cancer diagnosis was not a factor in his decision.
