LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)--  Two Kentucky lawmakers plan to introduce a bill that would ban people from smoking in the workplace and in public places, such as restaurants and bars. Sen. Julie Denton of Louisville is behind the potential legislation.

“I think this is such an important public health issue that the state needs to be involved,” Denton said.

Louisville already has a ban in place, but the majority of Kentuckians don’t live in a community with a smoke-free law. In Shelbyville, some people like it that way and some people don’t.

“It would be nice just to not have a smoky atmosphere when you eat,” Ty Robinson said.

24 states have laws already that would be similar to what the proposed legislation in Kentucky would look like. Some other lawmakers don’t support the issue.

“I don’t believe it’s the role of government to step in and do something like that,” said Sen. Robert Stivers.
