Much of America is carrying around a lot of extra pounds, according to a new survey released Monday.

A dozen U.S. states have adult obesity rates that topped 30 percent last year.

Mississippi leads the way with an obesity rate of nearly 35 percent. Louisiana is second, followed by West Virginia, Alabama and Michigan. Indiana is tied at number eight with South Carolina, and Kentucky comes in at the 10th spot along with Texas.

According to the study, 26 of the 30 states with the highest obesity rates are in the Midwest and South.
Colorado had the lowest obesity rate at a little under 21 percent.

The report was released by Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
The analysis was based on state obesity rates provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
